The Exciting Ford New Car Model Range
The Ford New Van Model Range
Getting a car on the Motability scheme can open up a whole new world of opportunities for you and your family – and this is never truer than when looking for fun family days out.
Let’s face it, there’s only so much Netflix and an iPhone can do to keep an energetic child entertained during the weekends or a school holiday, so why not get the car out of the garage and explore one of the many amazing places across the UK?
Here’s our pick of the best places for a family day out that young and old can enjoy…
ENGLAND – South
Cornwall: the best family day out for experiencing nature (without worrying about the weather)
Since it first opened its doors in 2001, Cornwall’s Eden Project has become a ‘must see’ on any visit to Cornwall and is located just off the A390/1 motorways, making it a great spot to take the car on a family day trip.
Home to the world’s largest indoor rainforest, the Eden Project is ideal for those grey days when the weather is doing its typically British thing and you need a little warmth on your skin (the temperatures can get up to 35 degrees so wear suitable clothing!).
The two biomes (essentially giant domed greenhouses) contain some of the rarest and most important plants in the world, with the rainforest biome housing a spectacular canopy walkway that offers amazing views of all the plants and trees.
If the weather does perk up then there are plenty of outdoor attractions to see here too, while a short trip in your Motability vehicle should see you pull up to one of the lovely beaches in an area affectionately referred to as the Cornish Riviera.
Bournemouth: the best family day out for blowing away the cobwebs
While Brighton may be considered the trendy seaside town on the south coast, Bournemouth has plenty to offer those looking for a fun family day out.
The more sedate pace makes exploring Bournemouth beach a more enjoyable experience than fighting the crowds at Brighton, while a short drive in your Motability vehicle will take you to Hengistbury Head Beach with its wildlife areas and outdoor pursuits.
Those looking for activities for disabled children or older relatives also have plenty available to them, with the Bournemouth Aquarium – called Oceanarium – having plenty to keep young and old entertained.
With plenty of parking available around the resort town, Bournemouth is perfect for those families who want to soak up the sun, sea and sand without the stress.
ENGLAND – North
The Forbidden Corner in North Yorkshire labels itself ‘the strangest place in the world’ and who are we to argue? If anyone in your family likes fairy tales or solving puzzles, they’re in for a real treat.
This unique attraction is a folly garden built as a treasure hunt. Visitors are given a series of simple riddles to solve, which handily doubles as a checklist that ensures you visit the complex of topiary animals, ornate statues and sculptures, water fountains, underground tunnels and more. This is a place that will surprise and delight adults and kids alike – but be aware that some optional sections might be a bit scary for younger children, and not all areas are wheelchair accessible.
A visit to The Forbidden Corner typically takes around two hours, so if you and your family still have time and energy to spare, stop in at the nearby Middleham Castle. Once home to King Richard III, this imposing ruin is full of enchanting stories from the past.
St Fagans is one of the most popular attractions in Wales and it’s easy to see why – the open-air attraction scooped the prestigious award of Art Fund Museum of the Year in 2019.
Just a few minutes outside Cardiff and easily accessible by car, St Fagans has more than 40 original buildings from different periods in Welsh history, from ironworkers’ cottages to a Victorian country school. allowing you to really experience what it was like to live hundreds of years ago.
The attraction is dog-friendly (provided they are kept on a lead) and has extensive access for wheelchair users, meaning the whole family can jump in the car and enjoy the experience.
Edinburgh: the best family day out for book lovers
Lovers of literature can find something wherever they venture across the UK – from Shakespeare’s Stratford-upon-Avon to the Yorkshire house the Brontë sisters grew up in.
However, for the sheer breadth of important literary sites, you’d be hard-pressed to beat Edinburgh.
The Scottish capital is the perfect place to explore the haunts of a host of famous authors and poets including Robert Burns, Robert Louis Stevenson, JK Rowling and JM Barrie. You can explore them yourself or take one of the several guided tours that are run across the city.
And if you fancy extending your stay beyond the day and exploring more of Edinburgh’s many sights, then there are plenty of great family-friendly hotels with parking for your Motability vehicle in and around the city centre.
The Causeway Coastal Route: the best family day out for magical myths and stunning scenery
Running along the rugged north east coast of Northern Ireland, the Causeway Coastal Route winds its way from Derry to the capital of Belfast.
With some of the most spectacular coastline to be found anywhere on the planet, jump in your Motability vehicle for a road trip that takes in dramatic cliff faces, historic castles and, of course, the world famous Giant’s Causeway.
The UNESCO World Heritage site is a spectacular spot on the coast that features thousands of interlocking rocks that are the result of an ancient volcanic eruption not – as legend once told – the handiwork of the Irish giant, Fionn mac Cumhaill.
Elsewhere you will find glens full of wildlife and charming seaside villages such as Carrickfergus. For the more adventurous, the dramatic Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge spans from mainland to an old fishing island. The stunning coastal views here are like nowhere else in the world.
