Everything you need to know about servicing EVs

With the surge in popularity of electric cars, the quest for a reliable mechanic to service them is a major concern for electric vehicle (EV) owners. Unlike traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, EVs boast unique components and systems that specialist knowledge and skills to keep them in perfect working order.

So, how do you find the right EV mechanic for your car? Here are our top tips when looking for an EV specialist.

Hybrid and electric vehicles (EVs) are certainly cheaper to run than traditional petrol or diesel cars or vans. Firstly, they are a lot simpler when it comes to their engines. And with lower fuel costs, tax benefits and less depreciation, the savings quickly add up.

But that doesn’t mean overlooking MOTs and regular servicing. Especially after a season of winter driving, or if you notice a sudden dip in range, you might need to see an EV mechanic to get you back on the road.

Remember, at TrustFord, all our EV technicians have the qualifications and experience to ensure you can get your Ford EV serviced to the highest standards.

What needs maintenance on an electric vehicle?

Some of the servicing on an EV is the same as servicing a petrol car. Windscreens, aircon, lights – all the same. However, electric vehicles need some TLC on various components to keep them running smoothly. These are the:

EV batteries

Your EV batteries won’t need as much maintenance, given there are far fewer moving parts than your regular petrol car. Think about your electric vehicle's motor and battery as the dynamic duo that keeps you moving. The battery is the heart of your EV, so it needs regular checks for any signs of wear and tear.

Regular servicing can catch potential issues early, preventing problems like battery degradation, especially as irregular charging can affect the efficiency of batteries over time. With regular maintenance, you'll avoid costly repairs and enjoy a hassle-free driving experience. Follow TrustFord’s service schedule for your batteries, and your EV will run smoothly for years to come.

The Brakes

Let's talk brakes! Keeping them in top shape is key for safety and can also prevent nasty, expensive surprises later down the road.

Give them a regular check to catch any wear and tear. Ignoring brake maintenance could mean less stopping power, dirty brake fluid, or even damaged rotors. If your EV has regenerative braking, it will reduce the wear and tear on the brake pads and discs, but that doesn’t mean you can ignore it completely.

A typical EV service should include changing and thoroughly checking the regenerative system.

The Tyres

Properly inflated tyres on your EV reduce rolling resistance, enhancing energy efficiency and extending your EV's range.

Ensuring your tyres are in good condition becomes even more crucial. Tyre treads need to be 1.6 millimetres deep by law, and it’s best to replace them when the depth reaches 3.0 millimetres. If you’re unsure, take a look at our specialist tyre support and information. By keeping a beady eye on your tyre pressure, tread wear, and alignment, you'll reduce the number of times you plug in and charge and minimise wear and tear on your EV's components.

Oil and Coolant

While electric vehicles don't use oil, unlike internal combustion engine vehicles, their coolant systems are critical for regulating temperatures in the transmission. Regular maintenance will help spot the potential for overheating and damage.

Stay ahead by checking coolant levels and condition. EVs also need regular lubrication of vital joints, axles, and drive shafts to stay efficient and maintain mileage range.

The Suspension

Suspension is another hero of your electric ride. It's what keeps your car cruising smoothly over potholes, providing comfort and control. So again, get the suspension checked regularly. EVs are heavier than petrol cars, so the springs and dampers wear out quicker.

This can lead to issues like uneven tyre wear, decreased handling, and a bumpy ride. At TrustFord, our EV technicians will check them as part of any significant service.

Motor and Drivetrain

Your electric motor and drivetrain will have far fewer moving parts but they work hard, so your EV mechanic should inspect both for wear and tear.

The Software

EV software extends beyond the latest GPS or A/C sensor. Taking advantage of software updates is like giving your EV a brain boost. They are critical to your vehicle's operating system and essential for performance and safety.

How often do you need to service your EV?

Every car, electric or not, needs a regular service. At TrustFord, our EV technicians recommend a service every 18,000 miles or yearly, whichever comes first. However, how you use your car will vary, of course. We find our customers like to tie their EV servicing in with their MOT, so everything is sorted in one go.

Other things to consider when looking for an electric vehicle mechanic

When searching for a mechanic to service your electric vehicle (EV), there are a few other things to think about beyond traditional car mechanics:

  • EV servicing certificates and training
  • How many years of experience the mechanic has
  • Sometimes, a traditional mechanic can help

Look for certification and training in EV vehicles

There are some important qualifications to look for in electric vehicle mechanics. The UK government recommends these certifications for electric vehicle mechanics:

  • Level 2 Certificate in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Principles
  • Level 2 Diploma in Auto Electrical and Mobile Electrical Competence
  • Level 3 Diploma in Light Vehicle Maintenance and Repair
  • T Level in Maintenance, Installation and Repair for Engineering and Manufacturing

Seek out EV mechanics with experience

EVs are not a new concept. Their use has increased dramatically over the last twenty years.

TrustFord's EV servicing teams carry out all EV servicing. They possess the experience, specialised skills, tools, diagnostic equipment, and certificates needed for top-notch EV maintenance and boast unparalleled expertise in Ford EV cars.

Can you get a non-Ford EV or hybrid serviced through Ford?

At the moment, Ford mechanics rarely service other brand’s EV’s. In the future, this might change.

If you have a non-Ford hybrid, a Ford mechanic is happy to service it for you.

Can a traditional car mechanic help?

You might not even need an EV specialist for many fixes and checks. A regular car mechanic can help with cracks in your windscreen, light replacements and AC repairs. As well as conduct MOTs, of course. All of which you can also have maintained here are TrustFord. But to help you understand what might need servicing by one of our EV specialists, watch our Owners Club EV service video.
