Timing belt and water pump replacement

These connected parts are both crucial to engine function. The timing belt (also known as the cambelt) synchronises the camshaft and crankshaft to keep engine cylinders firing at the right time. The water pump keeps the engine at a safe temperature by pumping coolant from the radiator around the engine's cooling system.

Lifespan depends on usage and engine type, so it's best to check your owner's manual for replacement intervals. However, because the water pump is driven by the timing belt, and both parts have similar lifespans, it usually makes sense to replace them at the same time.

Ford Timing Belt FAQs

• What’s the difference between a cambelt and a timing belt? Nothing, they are the same thing.
• When will I need to replace the cambelt on my Ford? Ford timing belts must be replaced according to the manufacturer's recommendation. Check your handbook or with your local dealership to find your model's timing belt replacement interval.
• How can I tell if my cambelt is going to snap? You can’t, but if you hear strange noises from the engine, bring your vehicle into your nearest TrustFord Service Centre to get it checked out as soon as you can.
• If my cambelt snaps, what happens to my engine? If the timing belt snaps, the pistons will connect with the valves in the cylinder head and cause serious damage to your engine that may not be repairable.
• Can an engine be repaired after the timing belt has snapped? Sometimes. If it can be repaired, a specialist technician will have to remove the cylinder head and the valves. They will check the valve guides for damage and then rebuild the cylinder head with new valve steam oil seals. Finally, a new head gasket and cambelt need to be fitted before the engine can be tested.
